The Real Mary Kings Close
Buried deep beneath the Royal Mile lies Edinburgh’s deepest secret; a time capsule of hidden streets under the City Chambers. Discover how the fate of this once bustling environment was finally sealed. The unique and historic site of The Real Mary King’s Close consists of a network of four streets where visitors can see the remains of original town houses and rooms, spanning five centuries of history dating back to the 1500s.
These narrow streets, with houses originally built up to eight storeys high, were used as the foundations for the Royal Exchange, (now the City Chambers), which was built directly over the top of the streets in 1753.
In the company of a costumed character tour guide, a one-time resident of the close, guests can navigate the fascinating twists and turns of the underground closes. Visitors will discover some of the most dramatic episodes from Edinburgh’s incredible past and the real stories of the people who lived, worked and died here between the 16th – 20th centuries.
