Stockport Air Raid Shelters
These air raid shelters have been imaginatively restored to give visitors a feel of how people struggled during the war in the 1940s. A network of tunnels, nearly one mile long, provided air raid shelter for over 6,500 men, women and children during the Second World War.
Explore this fascinating underground network and experience how life was beneath Stockport’s streets. See how the shelters were fitted with electric lights, wooden benches, bunk beds, wardens’ posts, first aid posts and a 16-seater toilet.
Learn why everyone had to have a gas mask and why they had to carry it with them wherever they went.
