Roman Army Museum
This spacious museum is an authentic and dramatic tribute to Rome’s extraordinary military legacy. Walk along three galleries and step into the life of a Roman soldier and experience how it was on the front line of Emperor Hadrian’s formidable British frontier.
In Gallery 1 watch how the Empire expanded and contracted, learn about the different strengths and skills of different types of soldiers, and view real Roman artefacts and fascinating objects excavated along Hadrian’s Wall.
In Gallery 2 learn all about Hadrian’s Wall and watch the award-winning 3D film, ‘Edge of the Empire’, which gives an aerial view of Hadrian’s Wall as it is today and then transports you back to nearly 2,000 years. Immerse yourself back into Roman times and learn what life was like on the wall for the ambitious soldier ‘Aquila’, what it took to rise through the ranks and why many didn’t make it. Watching this film will be a truly memorable time travel experience.
Gallery 3 shows the daily life of the multicultural army which is very interesting, especially if you have seen the 3D film. There is so much to see, learn and do here, you and your family will never be bored. This museum makes a fantastic day out and is well worth visiting. It is an ideal venue for the whole of the family.
