If you are ever in the beautiful English county of Derby, why not climb up to the remains of Peveril Castle and get a feeling of what a castle was really like back in the 11th century. Visit the ‘keep’, a fortified tower, and take in the breath taking views over Hope Valley and the pretty village of Castleton.
Afterwards you could stroll around the castle’s grounds and find a flat grassy area where the whole family can enjoy a picnic in idyllic settings.
Visit the Visitor Centre at the bottom of the hill and learn all about the castle’s history and see artefacts such as horseshoes and medieval coins.
Opening Times: Open most of the year.
Costs: Entrance is free for English Heritage members, otherwise costs are £4.60 for adults and £2.80 for children.
