Hidden away in a quiet corner of Basingstoke, Milestones is a delightful museum that brings the past alive, allowing visitors of all ages to connect with history in a fun and fascinating environment.
Complete with life-size replicas of genuine Victorian and 1930s street scenes, interactive displays, vintage vehicles and colourful exhibits from the 1930s through to the 1970s, Milestones evokes nostalgic memories in visitors who have lived through those years, and delights and amazes younger generations who view it all through fresh eyes.
The network of streets features full-size replicas of original buildings that existed across the county of Hampshire, including a fire station, working Edwardian alehouse, toy shop, 1940s sweet shop, tobacconist’s, watchmaker’s and train station.
Visitors step back in time to listen to their chosen tune in the gramophone shop, buy an old penny and exchange it for a two-ounce ration of strawberry bonbons or peppermint humbugs from the sweet shop, dress up in Victorian attire with all the family and stop for a drink in the Baverstock Arms.
Other attractions include a mini post office where under fives can dress up and play ‘shop’, children’s ‘I Spy’ and other free trails, and Collection Corner where visitors can marvel at the likes of hair perming equipment and domestic equipment dating back to 20th century and a myriad of exhibits that will inspire cries of “I used to have one of those”!
And, with around 21,000 genuine artefacts covering transport, technology and lifestyle through the ages and ranging from a tiny pen nib to a gigantic steam engine, Milestones offers the best way of teaching children and students about their history by making education fun.
Costumed characters dressed in authentic garb from the Victorian era through to 1945 add to the whole experience by bringing exhibits to life, regaling visitors young and old with tales of life gone by and answering questions about what it was like to live and work in a former time.
Milestones, which also boasts an inviting 1950s-style café and a gift shop packed with present ideas, traditional toys and retro memorabilia, is open from Tuesday to Friday and Bank Holidays from 10am until 4.45pm and on Saturdays and Sundays from 11am until 4.45pm.
