Maeshowe Chambered Cairn
Leave the outside world and take an atmospheric guided tour underground where you will witness a monumental chambered tomb and passage grave over 5,000 years old. You will also see 12th century carved graffiti ruins etched into the walls of the main chamber. This graffiti comprising of runic inscription was created by Viking Crusaders and is the largest collection outside Scandinavia.
The interior of the tomb is in an excellent state of preservation and the Neolithic design and stonework construction is amazing, especially the massive individual stones. For anybody who is interested in archaeology this ancient site is a must to visit.
Admission to the tomb has to be pre-booked at Tormiston Mill Visitor Centre and is a timed ticket as guided tours are at set times.
There are other interesting ancient sites such as Skara Brae, the Ring of Brodgar and the Stones of Stenness that can be visited in Maeshowe, which is part of the Heart of the Neolithic Orkney World Heritage Site.
Facilities: Timed tours now operate, call in advance to book on 01856 761 606. Tours usually run on the hour. The Maeshowe chamber can be rather claustrophobic and that staff should be informed prior to entry of any concerns.
