Caudwell's Mill

Rowsley, Matlock, Derbyshire DE4 2EB
Bakewell Road Rowsley England DE4 2EB GB

Visit Derbyshire’s unique 19th century flour mill which has the only complete Victorian water turbine-powered roller mill in the country. Wander around the four floors of the mill and feast your eyes on machinery that is still driven by many leather belts and pulleys from line shafts. Interestingly, this mill uses water power to produce its own electricity.

There are numerous displays and hands-on models on site where you can learn all about the mechanics of the mill, making your visit informative and enjoyable. It is fascinating for children and adults to see how wheat is turned into flour. You can also see a working blacksmith, a stonemason and a working glass blower on site. After you have visited the mill you could take a wander around the Mill Shop which provides a vast range of quality flours, and you can even ask for one or two tried and tested ‘free’ recipes to inspire your cooking. If you have some time on your hands, you could also take a stroll along the nature trail or around Rowsley village which is at the edge of the Peak District National Park. And if you build up an appetite you could take refreshments at the vegetarian restaurant which looks over open fields and the mill.
